Information Sheet: agorafauxbia.com respondents

Project title: Please don’t tell my boyfriend I pretend to be a drag queen while he’s at work: grown-up play out of the closet.

Aims of the project:

This research will investigate why pretend play in adulthood might be hidden, secretive and private, and how in public life pretend or persona play is legitimised within the contexts of serious adult venture; as such, considerations of what may or may not constitute acts of performance will run through the work. This research uses autoethnography to explore pretend and imaginative play carried privately into adulthood, emerging into the public sphere via the adult world of drag performance. This research aims to uncover and examine tensions which emerge when private grown-up play is contextualised in the public sphere and will investigate what is at stake when one’s private, subjective fantasies become tangled up with notions of seeing and being seen in performance, not least within the age of social media and web 2.0.
